NATALIE L. DARDEN is
a fresh new voice within today’s budding world of contemporary Afro-American
fiction writers. A writer by leisure since the tender age of eight,
Natalie decided during a turning point in her career to explore her hand
as a published writer.
“Writing has
always been a form a therapy for me,” Darden recalls of her formative writing
years. She completed two young adult novels before her seventeenth birthday.
“Ever since I could remember, I was always nose-deep into a book. During
high school, I chose a voluntary position as a library page to keep close
ties with books as a way of fulfilling my community service obligation
with the National Honor Society.”
Originally,
Darden wrote as a hobby. She had never actually considered seriously publishing.
It wasn’t until a fiery desire for writing overpowered her ordinarily diligent
work habits. That urge propelled Darden to leave a career of seven years
to fully concentrate on writing. “I’d been so sheltered with my job responsibilities,
I didn’t realize that the market for African-American fiction was so vast,”
she commented. Less than six months and many sleepless nights later, “All
About Me” was born.
Darden seeks
to entertain and touch the lives of others through her writing. An avid
reader of various genres, some of her favorite writers include Eric Jerome
Dickey and Donald Goines. In addition, she enjoys horror stories and Greek
mythology. Darden also heralds and holds respect for great Afro-American
contemporaries such as Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Gloria Naylor, and
many more.
Darden is a
graduate of Rutgers University, where she obtained a BA in English and
Communications. A native of East Orange, New Jersey, she currently resides
in northeastern Pennsylvania and is actively working on her next novel
“Single as a Dollar Bill: Love Yourself First, the Rest Is Easy”, slated
for release winter 2004.
